Network Topology

Overview of the network topology of the peering LANs

London LANs

The LINX London Network consists of two separate high-performance Ethernet switching platforms installed across 10 locations.

  1. Telehouse North
  2. Telehouse East
  3. Telehouse West
  4. Digital Realty, Sovereign House, Marsh Wall
  5. Equinix, 6&7 Harbour Exchange
  6. Equinix, 8&9 Harbour Exchange
  7. Digital Realty, Bonnington House, Millharbour
  8. Equinix, Powergate, Acton
  9. Interxion, London City
  10. Equinix LD4/5, Slough

We do not own any of these sites ourselves. At each of them we are tenants in some form of co-location facility or carrier hotel. We are one of the UK's major users of such facilities and we are probably one of the most technically advanced users.

Switches from different equipment vendors, Extreme Networks and Juniper, are deployed in two diverse networks to provide an extra level of fault-tolerance, the logic being that both systems shouldn't develop the same fault at the same time.

Therefore, at least two switches (one from each vendor) are installed in every LINX location, and the locations are interconnected by multiple 10G or 100G  circuits (across dark fibre) to form two physically separate backbone rings.

Most LINX members connect to both switching platforms, which reduces the impact of any downtime on a single network element. For extra redundancy, some members choose to connect at multiple locations.

Physical protection of the dark fibre network is achieved by using diverse paths where available. All locations have air conditioning and backup power (UPS and generators) provided as standard.

Management of the logical redundancy of the network is done using rapid-failover protection mechanisms (EAPS or MRP). In the event of the loss of a network segment, these activate the redundant links within tenths of a second and restore connectivity.

With over 770 members connecting from over 76 different countries worldwide, LINX members have access to direct routes from a large number of diverse international peering partners.
