Press Statement - Reason for LINX Outage

On 31 May 2012, LINX had its first significant outage for 15 months. The outage generated much speculation on news and social media sites as to the cause. We have now completed our investigations with the continued support of our vendors and can confirm the following.

The source of the outage was activity of a Layer 2 provider and was neither a DDoS attack on the network or in any way associated with the Juniper PTX installations we are currently deploying. The root cause of the outage was a misconfiguration by LINX engineers on a few member ports where the MAC access filter had been deactivated.

LINX would like to acknowledge the outstanding support we have received from Juniper, not only during the investigation of this issue, but in helping us successfully deliver a large network upgrade whilst maintaining network stability for the last 15 months.

We can confirm that we have done a full audit of the Juniper LAN and that all ports now have the MAC filters enabled.
