Next Generation Data Centre, Newport named ‘Home of LINX Wales’ as new LINX PoP Goes LIVE

It was announced on Thursday 3rd September that regional exchange LINX Wales now has a fully functioning point of presence (PoP) at the NGD hyperscale data centre near Newport.

Launched in 2015, LINX Wales was present only at the Stadium House data centre facility in Cardiff with the expansion to NGD original due to go live in March of this year. However, the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the regulations put in place.

Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport Lee Waters said:

“I’m pleased to see that LINX have invested in Wales and that the new Internet Exchange is now up and running in Newport. The Welsh Government looks forward to LINX Wales and its new community of members developing as a valuable asset that will contribute to the broader digital economy in Wales.”

NGD, newly acquired by Vantage Data Centers, is home to UK enterprise, global cloud providers, global integrators and Fortune 500 companies. NGD’s out of town location is Europe’s largest data centre facility, offering vast amounts of space and totally renewable power. The facility supports the colocation and cloud hosting requirements of organisations of all sizes including the provision of bespoke data halls for larger customers.

UK Government publishes call for views on amending the NIS regulations

The UK Government has published a call for views to solicit industry feedback on its proposed changes to the NIS Regulations.

Under the Government’s proposals, competent authorities will have new powers to conduct tests that would be required to make informed assessments as to an operator’s levels of security of network and information systems. Competent authorities will also receive new enforcement powers that will allow them to initiate civil proceedings to ensure compliance with enforcement notices. The penalty regime will be amended to introduce a two-step process where competent authorities may serve a notice of intention to impose a penalty before making their final decision through a penalty notice. Finally, a new statutory appeal route via the First-Tier Tribunal will be introduced, which will have the power to uphold or quash the whole, or part, of a decision and to subsequently direct the competent authority to reconsider its original decision.

LINX LIVE! Review

LINX staged a special online member event on Wednesday 2nd September. This featured CEO, network and product updates from LINX while our Head of Public Affairs, Malcolm Hutty, presented details of an upcoming consultation on proposed changes to LINX’s Articles of Association.

Elsewhere on the programme LINX’s Head of Global Engagement, Nurani Nimpuno, moderated a panel session entitled The strength of the networking community during a crisis. Alex Kostiw, Operations Manager for Pinnacom, Marek Isalski , CTO for Faelix, and Andrew Fray, UK Managing Director for Interxion all shared their views on network resilience, remote hands, increased capacity and being flexible to help keep business networks afloat during the continuing pandemic.

We were also delighted to welcome TED speaker, and author of the book, Tubes, Andrew Blum, who gave a talk on the Supranet and how the global giants are changing the shape of the Internet.

Here is some of the feedback we received following the event:

  • “A great effort in these difficult times. Not the same as a ‘real meeting’ of cause but nice to catch up with developments none the less.”
  • “It was good to hear the (usual) updates, as and very interesting to hear Andrew Blum’s view/perspective. Looking forward to catching up remotely in the social!”

More information on this event can be found on the event page.

Member & Partner News

LINX data centre partner Telehouse and customer and LINX member Voxility, have just released a new case study. It highlights the benefits London has as a key interconnection hub and also how being able to access the LINX ecosystem has improved network costs and performance.

Telehoyse Voxility case study

…interconnection opportunities also played a major role, with Telehouse North serving close to 400 global carriers of all sizes and purposes. By establishing direct peering links with other operators on-site, Voxility reduced its costs in terms of internet transit…

August was a great month for new applications with networks looking to join us from South Africa, Columbia, Thailand, as well as from the UK.

Among the reasons for choosing LINX was to reduce transit costs and peer on our route servers. Networks looking to join LINX can do so directly or via our global ConneXions Reseller partner programme.

For example, Platinum ConneXions Reseller partner, Epsilon, helped LINX London members Asympto Networks begin peering at our US regional exchange, LINX NoVA. Thanks also go to Angola Cables and BICS for all their partnership work last month.

LINX Products and Services and the Need to Keep Evolving

By Jo Fereday, LINX Product Manager

To serve our members better, we need to be attractive to all the different types of members that connect to the exchange. LINX needs to keep growing the long tail by attracting new members and also encourage loyalty amongst the existing membership. All members benefit from the diversity and volume of the potential peers at LINX. We appreciate that most businesses are always looking for efficiencies and more value from their existing assets.

Like it or not companies are run and judged on their financial performance, not the quality of their engineering department, hence LINX has to offer more value. If members use their resources and capital to invest in peering at the LINX platform then LINX needs to ask what else can we offer aside from peering in return for that investment.
