Russia to force local storage of personal data

The Russian Duma has passed legislation that will force social networks and other online services to store personal data about Russian citizens within the country’s borders.

Bill number 553424-6, which was passed by the State Duma by 280 votes to none on Friday, mandates that:

...when collecting personal data, including information and telecommunications network, the Internet, the operator must ensure that record, systematization, accumulation, storage, updated, modified, removing the personal data of citizens of the Russian Federation, in databases, of information located in the territory of the Russian Federation.

If the law is passed by the Russia’s upper house, the Federation Council, it will come into force on September 1st 2016.
