The Queen has officially opened the UK’s new National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, speaking at the launch, stated that the centre will “not just focus on protecting against major attacks on critical national infrastructure, but also raising our security capability against day to day malicious cyber activity.” He called on businesses to improve their approach towards cyber saying that “Nine out of ten businesses don’t even have an incident management plan in the event of a cyber breach.”

The Chancellor also announced a new initiative, Industry 100, under which 100 temporary places will be given to private sector staff to work in the centre to “bring government and industry expertise together to work collaboratively and at scale to improve the identification of threats and vulnerabilities, and to enable the development of mitigation advice to reduce the impact of future cyber attacks.”

While the new NCSC office was officially opened yesterday, the organisation has been operational since October. In a report issued to mark its launch, the NCSC detailed some of its early work, which has included delivering “trial services that proactively discover vulnerabilities in public sector websites,” helping government departments “better manage spoofing of their email” and taking down “tens of thousands of phishing sites affecting the UK.”
