LINX Prepare to Welcome TeleData as 4th LINX Manchester PoP

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) are pleased to announce they will be launching a 4th site at their regional Internet exchange in Manchester.

Launched in 2012, LINX Manchester has gone from strength to strength attracting a productive mix of content and access networks on a local, national and international scale, who value the approach of ‘keeping traffic local’. The exchange boasts over 140 connected member ports, peak traffic of over 100Gbps and greater than the coveted 99.999 % for reliability.

Currently located in 3 data centre facilities, LINX Manchester is taking the leap and extending its footprint to a 4th point of presence (PoP) as they plan to welcome long standing LINX member and reseller partner TeleData to the platform.

Jo Fereday, Product Manager at LINX says:

“LINX were aware of the need to increase the choice of data centre partners in Manchester. Teledata are a great partner for LINX, they are long standing members, have a clear understanding of peering and are true supporters of the LINX Manchester Exchange. We are pleased to be able to make Teledata a LINX PoP.”

Multi-site deployment is key for a successful Internet exchange and LINX try to adopt this neutral approach across their whole network. It offers members choice of not only location but of carrier partners too, and also increases redundancy and resilience which remain as primary factors for any network looking to peer.

Commercial Director Matthew Edgley says:

“We are thrilled that LINX Manchester has selected us as their 4th Manchester PoP. It marks a real quality stamp for us as a carrier neutral data centre operator and is great news for our network intensive customer base, who will benefit significantly from peering on the LINX Manchester exchange directly from our site.”

TeleData have had significant growth in 2019 including the recent launch of their cloud platform, CloudActiv and joining LINX Manchester’s physical network is another great achievement and will offer current and future customers fast and simple access to peering at the IX.

Bringing Asia That Bit Closer: Japan IX and LINX Celebrate New Partnership

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Japan Internet Exchange (JPIX), as they join LINX’s IXP Reseller Partner Programme.

LINX launched their IXP Reseller Programme back in 2017 when they welcomed Italian IX NaMeX to the LINX partner programme. The idea of the programme is to work collaboratively with fellow exchanges, which in turn, strengthens LINX’s overall ethos of ‘Working for the Good of the Internet’.

LINX has noticed a significant increase in members joining and peering from the APAC region since 2016. Reasons behind this include the growing interest in London as a global hub for peering, particularly for new and emerging segments such as finance, retail and enterprise. Transport costs for networks trying to reach the UK are falling, making London an attractive place to interconnect and peer.

LINX CMO, Kurtis Lindqvist says;

“We are pleased to be partnering with JPIX. This is a positive and natural move for LINX, following the increased interest and demand from networks in Asia wanting to connect and peer in London. We are excited for what the future holds!”

The new partnership will allow JPIX’s customers to connect directly to LINX’s LON1 peering platform in London via a sole carrier partner. The connection will be ordered and managed by JPIX, making it as simple as possible for their customers to connect to LINX. It’s simply an additional service the customer can take advantage of.

JPIX are excited to be the first IX in the APAC region to offer this service to their existing customers. Ryosuke Yamazoe, CEO of JPIX says;

“We have been in discussions for a partnership with LINX for quite some time and the members of JPIX have looked forward to peering with the members of LINX via the JPIX platform.”

“Users of JPIX, on the average, can achieve 60-70% peering of their overall traffic, but with the capability to interconnect with the LINX members, we believe that 80% of the overall traffic can be delivered directly, resulting in higher quality & lower delivery costs contributing to the overall efficiency to the business of our members. Through this partnership with LINX, JPIX and LINX will continue in collaborating and creating industry best solutions to the benefit of our mutual members.”

LINX is the largest, solely member-owned Internet exchange in the world, with over 850 member ASNs connected to date. LINX members have the opportunity to reach approximately 80% of the global Internet, making it an increasingly key location for networks to meet and exchange traffic.

About JPIX

Since JPIX was established in July 1997 as the first commercial IX in Japan, they have provided IX service from a neutral standpoint. They currently offer IX port service in Nagoya and Osaka, in addition to the Tokyo metropolitan area, customers in other regions can peer locally without having to longer to arrange for a circuit from their premises to Tokyo as in the past.

By having IXs in multiple regions, it also becomes possible to use them to secure backup routes in the event of a large-scale disaster. Fiber switches provide complete redundancy for the IX equipment, and the impact of an unlikely equipment failure is kept to a minimum by automatically switching to backup equipment.

The maximum volume of traffic flowing through JPIX’s IXs exceeded 1Tbps as of March 2018. With about 190 member companies, the most of any IX in Japan, JPIX play a vital role as the core of Japan’s Internet.
