Enhancing Cloud Connectivity and Resilience in Kenya

Angani is a cloud services provider based in Kenya, delivering locally hosted applications and content to customers across the country. With a focus on low-latency performance and high reliability, Angani plays a key role in Kenya’s digital ecosystem, supporting businesses, developers and users with scalable cloud infrastructure.

Overcoming Interconnection Barriers Between Data Centres

Before joining the London Internet Exchange (LINX), Angani faced a number of interconnection and infrastructure challenges. Maintaining consistent performance meant relying heavily on their own backhaul to carry traffic between data centres in Nairobi and Mombasa. This approach limited redundancy and introduced unnecessary complexity. Additionally, accessing key content partners like Meta often required building infrastructure in specific facilities, leading to further cost and effort.

Having a presence in both Nairobi and Mombasa means Angani receives peer prefixes from other data centres without necessarily having their own Point of Presence (POP) there, something that was previously unreachable at this scale with other exchanges.

Why LINX Became the Ideal Interconnection Partner

Joining LINX presented a solution aimed at addressing these limitations. By becoming a LINX member, Angani gained access to a high-performance, carrier-neutral interconnection platform that allows networks to exchange traffic across data centres without needing a physical presence in each one. Inter-DC peering at both LINX Nairobi and LINX Mombasa has enabled Angani to peer with other networks, including Meta, without the need for separate POPs in every location.

Tangible Benefits: Lower Latency, More Redundancy, Greater Control

Since joining, Angani has seen improved latency and increased network redundancy. Meta traffic, for example, now reaches Angani’s Nairobi POP locally, which wasn’t possible before. In Mombasa, receiving Meta prefixes at iColo-MBA2 has eliminated the need to deploy further infrastructure just to access the same traffic. They are also the first cloud services peer within the region. All of this has resulted in greater efficiency and a better end-user experience.

The onboarding process via the LINX Member Portal was seamless. Supported by the LINX team and a free cross-connect from iColo, they were able to get up and running quickly, with no disruption.

The support is world class. The commitment LINX has shown to bringing in more of the big CDNs to the country is a very big plus.” Denson Ngumo, CTO, Angani

Building a Strong Partnership for the Future

LINX’s role extends beyond connectivity, they provide opportunities for all members to develop professionally. LINX’s regular in-person and virtual training sessions have helped upskill Angani’s network engineers, something they are keen to continue taking advantage of.

Looking ahead, Angani is excited about future collaboration. As one of the first cloud providers to peer at LINX in the region, they see the partnership as a long-term commitment, with plans to expand to new locations across Africa and continue to rely on LINX as their exchange of choice.
