LINX establishing 4th Manchester PoP at TeleData

Previously located in three data centre facilities, LINX Manchester is taking the leap and extending its footprint to a fourth point of presence (PoP) as we welcome long standing LINX member and reseller partner TeleData to the platform.

The fourth site goes live in early February. Initially the TeleData PoP will be single homed to Equinix Williams House while maintaining the current three site ring of LINX Manchester with Equinix Joule House and M247. In time the exchange will become a four site ring.

Launched in 2012, LINX Manchester boasts over 140 connected member ports, peak traffic of over 100Gbps and greater than the coveted 99.999 % for reliability. Existing and future TeleData customers will now be able to access the LINX Manchester peering LAN from their data centre facility.

Watch TeleData’s interview with Tom Hill, Vice Chair of the LINX Manchester steering committee, explain the potential benefits of connection at the new site.

LINX Manchester 4th site Launch Event

LINX and TeleData are co-hosting a special launch event at the new site on Thursday 13th February. Free to attend, those present will be able to hear from TeleData Director, Matt Edgley and LINX CEO Kurtis Lindqvist then enjoy refreshments while networking with the vibrant Manchester telco community. Guests to the launch will also be able to register in advance for a TeleData data centre tour.

See the event page for further details.

LINX and Telehouse Collaborate in Cloud Demands

LINX continue to go the extra mile for their community as they connect one of their member networks to the Telehouse Cloud Link platform, hosted by data centre partner Telehouse, from their London Docklands campus.

Telehouse’s Cloud Link services offers LINX members and Telehouse customers the ability to directly access cloud service providers within the Telehouse London Docklands campus without the need to extend their network beyond the Telehouse campus.

Nick Layzell, Senior Manager, Managed Services at Telehouse explains;

“With the continued move towards truly hybrid infrastructure, businesses can rest assured that they are able to connect to public cloud in the most secure and reliable way, while taking advantage of the extensive connectivity ecosystem Telehouse and LINX provides. Our Cloud Access services can benefit many LINX members that may already be within our facility or peering at LINX.”

Green means go for 5G! telent looks to traffic signals for rapid, cost-effective, scalable roll-out

By Gerard Donohue, CTO at telent

The next generation of mobile and connectivity will be delivered by 5G technology – the enabler for higher quality, content rich data services. Challenges associated with this evolution are already being felt by Service Providers as growing bandwidth pushes access networks to the limit. With 5G requiring an immense amount of small cells compared to existing technologies and the number of IoT connected devices over the next five years expected to increase to 20Bn+, this challenge will only become more substantial.

LINX Round Up

Worldwide networking – LINX meet with Seaborn Networks at PTC’20 in Hawaii

LINX Business Development Executive, Kendra Pignotti, had some exciting conversations at the PTC’20 (Pacific Telecommunications Council) annual event in Hawaii in January.

Kendra can be seen pictured with colleagues from LINX member Seaborn Networks who have been finalising plans to become an official LINX ConneXions partner.

Seaborn Networks, a leading developer-owner-operator of transoceanic subsea fiber optic cable systems (Seaborn), has announced high capacity connectivity from their Seabras-1 IP Network directly into key global IX locations.

You can read more about how this benefits their customer base in the press release on their company website.

January 2020 a bumper month for membership applications!

What a January for new applications, dare we say one of the best yet?

Here at LINX we welcomed 10 new member applications last month either directly, or via our ConneXions partners Epsilon, Clouvider and Hydra Communications.

Networks from the UK, US and South Africa have applied from a range of industry segments such as access, content and finance. The applications include 5 x 10G ports at LINX in London, LINX Scotland and LINX Manchester (including port orders for our new site at TeleData UK!).

Happy Peering everyone!

LINX Incentive Scheme – a reminder!

LINX launched a new incentive scheme on 1st January 2020 offering members six months free on 1GE to 10GE port upgrades as well as new 100GE ports for orders received during the first half of the year.

If a member places and commits to a 12 month minimum contract term by 30th June, the member will receive the first six months free of the contract term, and subsequently pay normal port fees for the remaining six months.

This incentive is available on all LINX LANs, excluding JEDIX. There are two situations that qualify for this incentive;

  • Upgrades from one or more 1GE ports to one or more 10GE ports

and / or

  • Purchase of additional 100GE ports, whereby a member already has a live 100GE on any LINX LAN.

The full terms and conditions of the incentive scheme can be viewed on the LINX website.

Packed agenda for the one day LINX108 member conference

The upcoming LINX108 member meeting on Monday 24th February will be the first in 20 years to held on a single day. This doesn’t mean there’s any less to talk about but the new condensed one day format is designed to help attendees maximise their time away from the office.

LINX understands the importance of networking time and that is still a major part of the programme. We are also continuing to offer the full range of technical and regulatory presentation content but in a change all LINX operational talks will be grouped together in the morning session with member and technical talks reserved for the afternoon. The exception is that the LINX constitutional EGM will take place at 2:30pm as per usual practice.

Here is a list of talks confirmed for LINX108:

  • BGP Telemetry (Ignas Bagdonas, Equinix)
  • Update on DNS over HTTPS – standards, browsers, resolvers, ISP trials & impact areas (Andy Fidler, BT)
  • 5G testbeds & trials, telecoms supply chain and barriers to adoption (Julian McGougan, techUK)
  • Fantastic People and where to find them: Making layers 8 and 9 work for you (Julia Freeman)
  • Associate member: Team Cymru / TC-UK Internet Security (James Shank)
  • Guest IXP: France-IX (Franck Simon)
  • RIPE Policy update (Nigel Titley)
  • The IXPDB and other Euro-IX Activities (Bijal Sanghani, Euro-IX)

Registration for LINX108 is open until Thursday 20th February and places are filling up fast. Don’t miss out!

LAIT Training Success for LINX Staff

Congratulations to our very own Mark Stokes from our sales team on passing the LAIT2 qualification, specialising in routing and OSPF.

LAIT, or the LINX Accredited Internet Technician qualification, was something we initiated back in the year 2000 to help address the critical shortage of skilled Internet engineers and technicians being experienced by ISPs.

Still going strong today, the course is available at three levels and is delivered by our commercial partners Systems & Network Training Ltd (SNT).

While we’ve highlighted Mark in this article most of LINX’s technical staff take part in the training with many completing all three stages up to LAIT3. These include senior network engineers Mo Shivji, Tim Preston, Mark Lloyd, Jan Kayser and Julian Salter.

Those who have completed LAIT2 include Esther Cobbinah, Andrei Bildaru, Sion Hope and Shahbaz Tariq and Joe Jefford while for LAIT1 Murphy Meng, Edward Weld and Terje Bråten of the Software team have all completed the course. The LINX NOC team also have LAIT1 graduates in Steve Ellis, Michal Wozniak, Michael Heather, Prachi Sankhe, Radomir Panayotov, Dimitri Loizou and Bernard Li.

Well done everyone!

Note that this is not a complete list of LINX staff to have taken part in the programme with number of staff set to take exams in the Spring. Look out for announcements in a future edition of the LINX newsletter.
