iColo Backs the LINX and Asteroid Co-operative Agreement – For the Good of the Internet in Kenya

iColo: A Digital Realty Company, a strategic data center partner for the London Internet Exchange (LINX) in Africa has shown their support for the recent co-operative agreement between LINX and Asteroid Kenya.

The announcement in September 2025 saw LINX and Asteroid come together to start the transition of their customers in Mombasa and Nairobi to LINX’s interconnection hubs in Kenya before a cessation of operations at Asteroid Kenya at the end of 2025.

iColo’s data center facilities – Mombasa One (MBA1) in Miritini and Mombasa Two (MBA2) in Nyali host the majority of the Asteroid customer networks impacted by this transition, making their involvement essential to the success of this initiative.

Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX commented;

“The support of our partners iColo in this project is crucial and we are grateful that we have such a close and collaborative relationship. We share the vision of improving interconnection and digital infrastructure in Kenya – always with the focus of providing excellent services and forging strong relationships!”

A Seamless Transition for East Africa’s Peering Ecosystem

The LINX and Asteroid teams are working together to provide a smooth and supported experience during the transition with many networks already live and peering at the LINX Mombasa and Nairobi interconnection hubs.

Nimpuno continues;

“Our teams are working closely and giving the customers and soon to be LINX members a one-to-one service to discuss their needs and wants when it comes to their network. It has been great to see how smooth the transition has been so far, with so many Kenyan networks joining LINX and gaining access to a whole suite of new interconnection services. This solidifies our belief that Kenya is well positioned as a major East African hub, supporting improved connectivity for the entire region.”

iColo’s Strategic Role

iColo’s carrier-neutral data centres have been pivotal to LINX’s growth in Kenya. Mombasa continues to experience strong growth in the interconnection market as one of the most internationally connected locations in Africa with seven submarine cables connecting Kenya to the entire coastline of Africa, as well as the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

Marcel Louw, Managing Director, Africa at Digital Realty comments;

“We are excited to support LINX in this important evolution. Our partnership has already delivered strong results in Nairobi and Mombasa, and we look forward to enabling further growth and innovation in East Africa’s digital ecosystem.”

This co-operation reinforces LINX’s commitment to building resilient and future-proof interconnection fabrics across Africa.
