LINX and NAPAfrica Announce Strategic Collaboration

LINX has announced a strategic collaboration with African Internet Exchange Point, NAPAfrica.

Located within the  Teraco data centre facilities in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, NAPAfrica’s founding goal is to help make Internet access more universal and accessible across the African continent.

The partnership will mean networks currently connected and peering at NAPAfrica or LINX can access either of the exchanges via trusted and mutually available carriers.

Michele McCann, Head of Interconnection and Peering at Teraco, says: “We are excited to be collaborating with LINX to provide clients with a more direct and improved internet experience to any LINX location. The immediate benefit to carriers, cloud providers and content delivery networks, connected or peering at either NAPAfrica or LINX in London, is a more streamlined end-user experience.”

Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement for LINX, says: “We have always worked closely with our friends at NAPAfrica, sharing technical knowledge and insights. Announcing a more strategic partnership will open doors and optimal routes to Europe for the African networks who may not have been able to reach us before.”

Deploying OpenBGPD at LINX Wales and LINX Scotland – Why it matters

LINX recently deployed new route servers running OpenBGPD at LINX regional exchanges, LINX Wales and LINX Scotland. This was in part as a result of an initiative by the Route Server Support Foundation (RSSF) for Internet Exchange Points to operate a working route server as an alternative to the long-established BIRD route server platform.

We caught up with LINX Senior Network Engineer, Mo Shivji, to discuss OpenBGPD and how and why it’s being implemented at LINX.

UK Government to amend Online Safety Bill before it returns to Parliament

The UK Government’s new Culture Secretary Michelle Dolan has said that the controversial Online Safety Bill will return to Parliament “quickly”. The bill requires technology companies to protect their users from illegal content such as child-abuse images. However, Ms. Dolan said that changes would be made to the rules that also require companies to tackle “legal but harmful” material, which have been criticised for their impact on freedom of expression.

She did not provide details of the changes the Government was considering but did specify that they will only be “in relation to adults” and that the “bits in relation to children and online safety will not be changing”.

She declined to specify how she would ensure that “harmful” content accessed by adults was not also seen by children, saying “we need to make those announcements in Parliament.” However, there have been suggestions it might require websites to either age verify all their users or attempt to use some form of targeted age assurance technology on users they suspect may be minors.
