LINX Manchester

Uniting Networks. Igniting the Internet. Join LINX

LINX Manchester - The Facts

In 2012 a group of network operators, some of them existing LINX members wanted more options to peer locally in Manchester. After a series of consultations with the local community it was agreed that a new local exchange would be created.

Launched in 2012, LINX Manchester is now located at four sites in the city. Two sites are based at Equinix in Williams House and Joule House, the third at the M247 data centre with TeleData coming on board in early 2020. The exchange has over 140 member ASNs connected and traffic regularly exceeds 100Gb/s, making LINX Manchester one of the busier exchanges in Europe.

LINX Manchester was set up to help enhance the UK’s Internet infrastructure with the aim of keeping traffic local. By joining LINX and connecting at LINX Manchester, you can deliver your customers a better and faster experience.

Why Peer at LINX Manchester?

• There is a good mix of content providers and access networks present at the exchange including Akamai, BBC, Janet and Virgin Media.
• Availability metrics achieves greater than the coveted 99.999 % reliability
• Resilience is a major feature and this is reflected in our topology and our two route servers.
• FREE 1GE port with LINX annual membership

Keeping Traffic Local

LINX Manchester is not connected back to the LINX exchange in London as our mission is to keep traffic local. Read more from LINX member and LINX Manchester Connexions Reseller Partner, Exascale in this case study.

Exascale’s network has been designed with 'keeping traffic local' in-mind so when exchanging traffic in a particular region and they see a peer (not transit) announcing a route locally, regardless if the path is longer, they will hand off the traffic. Instead of back hauling the traffic to another Internet exchange where there may be a shorter path or is preferenced higher.

How to Connect to LINX Manchester

Networks can interconnect at any of the LINX peering LANs directly or via one of our ConneXions Reseller Partners. However new members connect to LINX, they all pay the same annual membership fee and are entitled to all the same great benefits. Meet just some of our reseller partners for LINX Manchester here;
