How Optinet Scales a Resilient, Low Latency Network with LINX

Optinet is a business service provider working across major sectors such as finance, retail, construction and healthcare. They support 1,500+ customers across 12,000+ nationwide sites, offering connectivity via FTTP and Ethernet alongside fully managed network services. Crucially, Optinet runs their own fibre infrastructure as well as utilising wholesale fibre, giving them the flexibility to deliver connectivity on their own terms, rather than being constrained by others.

That control extends to how traffic reaches the wider internet. Optinet is connected and peering at both of LINX’s London interconnection hubs, LON1 and LON2, each at 100Gbps. 79% of Optinet’s download traffic and 53.2% of upload traffic running across the LINX network.

A Fresh Approach to Business Connectivity

Optinet was built to take a different approach when delivering connectivity to businesses. The focus is on modernising both the delivery process and the customer experience, while future proofing connectivity for the long term. By deploying their own infrastructure and offering short term, high capacity bandwidth, they’re able to move past legacy issues and delivery constraints that have traditionally slowed the industry down.

Physical infrastructure is only part of the picture. Their customers need to reach the applications and content they depend on as quickly and reliably as possible and the network is built specifically around that requirement.

Direct Access Through LINX

As one of the largest peering ecosystems in the UK, LINX gives Optinet direct access to every major network, data and content provider their customer relies on in one place. That reach was the main driver behind the decision to join and LINX has been part of the plan since Optinet was first established.

Sean Pearman, who co-founded Optinet, sees that access as their primary route to the wider internet.

Resilience Across LON1 and LON2

Connecting across both interconnection hubs was primarily a decision about resilience. With traffic running over two independent paths, connectivity stays robust and customer performance is maintained even if one path is disrupted.

The dual connection also delivers the high capacity, low latency peering that underpins the experiences Optinet sets out to provide, combining the reach of the LINX ecosystem with the physical and geographic diversity of two separate LANs.

Scaling for AI-Driven Demand

Optinet’s future is centred on growth and a significant proportion of the forecasted increase in internet bandwidth is being driven by AI. As that demand rises, they expect to increase their bandwidth to support requirements, adding more high capacity ports and connectivity across additional LINX interconnection hubs.
