As a not-for-profit organisation, we focus on investing our service and membership fees into strengthening all LINX network services. This ensures that our infrastructure is as up to date as possible and that we remain at the forefront of the IXP industry. IXCardiff, the first Internet exchange point in Wales, was officially launched in October 2014. It is a standalone exchange and doesn't connect to any other peering LANs operated by LINX.
Based at BT Stadium House, Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, the exchange continues LINX’s ongoing commitment to build regional exchanges and ‘Keep traffic local'.
The LINX London Network consists of two separate high-performance Ethernet switching platforms installed across 11 locations. These are located within datacentre sites operated by Telehouse Europe, TelecityGroup, Interxion, Equinix and Digital Realty in a metropolitan network spanning 64km.
Switches from different equipment vendors, Extreme Networks and Juniper, are deployed in two diverse networks to provide an extra level of fault-tolerance, the logic being that both systems shouldn't develop the same fault at the same time.
Therefore, at least two switches are installed (one from each vendor) in every LINX location, with each site interconnected by multiple 10 gigabit Ethernet circuits (across dark fibre) to form the two physically separate backbone rings.
Established in 2012 in the north west of England, IXManchester is the UK's largest Internet exchange point outside of London, connecting over 70 different network operators.
IXManchester now covers four different data centres in the city and is powered by Extreme Networks hardware. It is a standalone exchange and doesn't connect to any other peering LANs operated by LINX.
After two successful consultation meetings, plans to build an Internet exchange in Scotland were given the go ahead by LINX in 2013. Located in the South Gyle data centre in Edinburgh, IXScotland was the first LINX regional exchange to be established outside of England.
The latest hardware from Extreme Networks enables all the advanced features expected from a modern exchange. Networks are free to connect exclusively if they wish and have full LINX membership and voting rights.
Following discussions with the US network community, and its own members, LINX launched an open peering exchange in North America known as LINX NoVA in 2013.
Based in the North Virginia/Washington DC area, LINX NoVA currently spans three data centres operated by Coresite (Reston), DuPont Fabros Technology (Ashburn) and EvoSwitch (Manassas).
The exchange has been designed to conform to Open-IX standards, using systems and processes that have proved successful in Europe and the wider world for over 20 years. LINX NoVA was the first IXP in the world to be awarded Open-IX certification.
