New Traffic Peaks at LINX NoVA Following Fiber Network Upgrade

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) are celebrating a new traffic peak at their regional exchange point in Northern Virginia, LINX NoVA following engineering upgrades.

LINX NoVA was established back in 2014 following demand from the peering community for an interconnection point in order to keep Internet traffic exchanged on a local basis.

Currently located in Digital Realty in Ashburn, Coresite in Reston and Evoswitch in Manassas, LINX NoVA’s fiber ring which interconnects these locations was nearing capacity due to the increase in traffic this year.

Mid-September saw the LINX engineering team working together with the data center remote hands teams to upgrade the fiber to 160G capacity for now, to satisfy the influx in Internet traffic these past six months.

Kendra Pignotti is the Peering Advisor for LINX in the US;

“We’ve known we were getting close to capacity here at NoVA, so I’m so pleased that our team have managed to turn this around so quickly.”

“The increase in traffic over here has followed the trends globally, with general Internet usage being more and also in different geographies, so more remote working and use of different platforms all becomes contributing factors. I remember four years ago when I started with LINX, we were just about touching 15Gbps. To now see the traffic peak getting close to 80Gbps is so satisfying for me and I can’t wait to see it climb higher over the next few months.”

LINX have seen a number of members including a large Content Delivery Network (CDN) upgrade their ports at LINX NoVA, some up to 200G. With more plans for growth at the Northern Virginia exchange, LINX are expecting traffic levels to go from strength to strength.
