Candidate Statement
Nico Walters – CMC Networks
With over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry—spanning technical leadership, commercial strategy, and senior executive roles—I am honoured to present my candidacy for the LINX Board. I currently serve as Chief Innovation Officer at CMC Networks, a global telecommunications services provider with a strong focus on the EMEA region. My career has been defined by a passion for advancing interconnectivity, optimising network ecosystems, and driving innovation in global IP infrastructure. I am confident that my background, expertise, and commitment to the Internet community make me a strong candidate to contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and impact of LINX.
Throughout my two decades in the industry, I have held progressively senior roles, with the past 10+ years specifically focused on global interconnection strategy and peering. I have led the expansion and optimisation of CMC Networks’ ASN, managing key relationships with global CDNs, hyperscalers, cloud providers, and Tier 1 networks. My work has directly enabled the enhancement of IP performance, resilience, and reach across our global footprint. These responsibilities have given me an in-depth understanding of both the technical and business dimensions of interconnection—an understanding I bring to industry forums, commercial negotiations, and strategic partnerships alike.
As a member representative at LINX for several years, I have overseen and driven CMC’s strategic engagement with LINX, ensuring our participation supports both our operational needs and the wider community. This includes our engagement with remote peering models and the enablement of regional connectivity solutions for our customers.
My motivation to stand for the LINX Board stems from a deep commitment to the sustainable and inclusive growth of the Internet ecosystem—particularly across Africa and the Middle East. As LINX expands its presence in these regions, I see a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully through my deep understanding of the regional landscape, my long-standing relationships with network operators and regulatory stakeholders, and my proven experience in enabling interconnection strategies in emerging markets.
I am particularly motivated to support LINX’s vision of enabling resilient, scalable, and locally-empowered Internet infrastructure. In a continent like Africa, where Internet penetration is rapidly growing but remains uneven, the presence of neutral and reliable Internet exchanges is vital. I believe I can add strategic insight and on-the-ground experience to guide LINX’s regional expansion and deliver value to its members across diverse geographies.
Beyond my direct involvement with LINX as a member representative, I have consistently engaged with the broader Internet ecosystem. I have participated in and spoken at numerous industry forums, including AfPIF, Capacity/Euromoney events, and regional peering event with Internet Exchanges such as NAPAfrica, sharing insights on IP transit, interconnection trends, and the future of Internet infrastructure in emerging regions. I have also championed initiatives within CMC to promote remote peering and educate our customer base on the value of IXPs.
Through these efforts, I have built a strong network of peers, partners, and advocates across the global Internet community—relationships I will actively leverage to support LINX’s strategic objectives.
I believe LINX is well-positioned to continue evolving as a trusted and globally respected Internet exchange. Key to this evolution will be deepening its global footprint, with a focus on high-impact emerging markets; enhancing its technical capabilities to meet increasingly complex demands; and continuing to promote transparency, neutrality, and member engagement.
From a regional perspective, I believe LINX’s expansion into Africa and the Middle East represents an opportunity not just for market growth, but for meaningful social and economic impact. By supporting local interconnection, LINX can help reduce latency, improve affordability, and empower local network operators. I am committed to contributing to this vision and ensuring it is pursued with cultural sensitivity, long-term commitment, and strategic foresight.
My strengths lie in strategic thinking, stakeholder engagement, and a deep technical-commercial understanding of global peering ecosystems. My experience operating in diverse and challenging markets has taught me how to align business objectives with community needs. I bring a collaborative approach, informed judgement, and a passion for innovation.
This would be my first appointment to a Board of this nature. However, I am in the final stages of completing my MBA, which has significantly expanded my governance, financial, and organisational leadership skills. I view this opportunity as a platform for continued professional development, and I am fully prepared to engage in additional training or mentorship as required to excel in the role.
I am excited at the possibility of serving on the LINX Board and contributing to its mission. I offer a unique blend of technical expertise, regional insight, and strategic vision, underpinned by a deep commitment to the growth and inclusivity of the global Internet. I would be honoured to receive your support.
