LINX Support and Enable New Route Server Route Leak Prevention Process

Written by Moyaze Shivji, Senior Network Engineer at LINX

The LINX engineering team has enabled RFC9234 on all LINX Route Servers for the detection and prevention of BGP route leaks, usually caused by errors and misconfigurations.

RFC (Request for Comments) – a formal document that can outline technical specs and protocols.

No significant BGP leaks instigated this project, it’s more of a preventative and collaborative effort for the Internet Exchange Point (IXP) and networking community.

LINX are joining together with fellow IXPs including AMS-IX, France-IX and Calgary-IX who have all agreed to deploy this process to their route-servers to help prevent future route-leaks.

RFC9234 will also be incorporated by other vendors whose solutions are also used for BGP peering in the global internet.

Each LINX exchanges hosts two route servers, LINX employs different software for enhanced redundancy and resilience using OpenBGPD and BIRD software. Both support RFC9243.

Peering with the route servers at LINX comes with no additional cost and provides increased options and redundancy for connectivity, crucial for maintaining network stability.
