The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has been recognised as one of the Business Reporter Best of British Businesses for 2026, celebrating more than three decades of quiet but critical service at the heart of the UK’s digital infrastructure.
For an organisation that has powered the nation’s connectivity largely behind the scenes, this accolade reinforces LINX’s essential role in ensuring the UK’s digital resilience, economic competitiveness, and global reputation for technological excellence.
Founded in 1994, LINX began when a small group of pioneering Internet Service Providers (ISPs) connected their networks locally to avoid the delays and costs of routing data via the United States. This transformative practice, peering, allows data to travel along shorter, more efficient paths, vastly improving speed, performance, and reliability for UK users.
As a not-for-profit, member-owned organisation, LINX operates with neutrality, transparency, and unwavering engineering focus. Every pound is reinvested into capacity expansion, technological upgrades, and strengthening national digital resilience. As more data remains within UK borders for latency, security, and compliance reasons, LINX’s sovereign interconnection capabilities are more important than ever.
Today, LINX’s independent UK exchange points in London, Manchester, Wales, and Scotland act as vital hubs where networks connect directly, locally, and efficiently.
The internet may feel instant, but its performance relies on a sophisticated web of interconnected networks. Before Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) like LINX, UK traffic often travelled to the US and back, resulting in slower, less reliable online experiences. Every time a user streams a film or sporting event, loads a webpage, joins a video call, or uses mobile data, there’s a high likelihood that the traffic passed through a LINX exchange.
By bringing together networks from global content providers and cloud platforms to regional ISPs and mobile operators, LINX ensures that data is exchanged swiftly, securely, and cost-effectively, without the need for countless individual agreements between networks.
LINX is now officially recognised as part of the UK’s critical national infrastructure, underpinning essential services from banking and e-commerce to smart cities and hybrid workplaces. As society becomes increasingly digital, LINX’s impact touches almost every aspect of daily life.
Jennifer Holmes, CEO of the London Internet Exchange, commented:
“Being named a Best of British Business for 2026 is a proud moment for everyone at LINX. It recognises not only the critical role London plays in the global internet ecosystem, but also the dedication of our staff, partners and members who work every day to keep the internet open, resilient and thriving. As a not‑for‑profit organisation, this recognition reinforces our long‑term commitment to supporting digital growth in the UK and beyond.”
This Best of British Business recognition reflects LINX’s sustained commitment to advancing the internet. Over three decades, LINX has continually modernised its platform, adopting innovation in routing, optical technologies, and automation to ensure the UK remains among the world’s best-connected digital hubs.
LINX supports hyperscale cloud growth, emerging AI applications, and the evolution of 5G and edge computing, often anticipating capacity needs before the market fully realises them.
While proudly rooted in the UK, LINX’s influence extends globally. Since 2014, LINX NoVA in Ashburn, Virginia the most connected region in the United States, has provided world-class interconnection services for many networks.
In 2023, LINX expanded into Africa to support one of the world’s fastest-growing digital regions. This initiative began with LINX Nairobi in 2023, followed by LINX Mombasa in early 2025. As internet adoption accelerates, many African nations are prioritising strong local interconnection ecosystems to reduce costs, improve performance, and promote digital self-sufficiency.
LINX launched LINX Accra in Ghana towards the end of 2025. An up-and-coming hot spot for interconnection in West Africa, LINX are committed to building a membership ecosystem here for the good of the Internet.
By sharing its expertise, LINX is helping emerging markets strengthen their connectivity foundations, drive economic growth, and enhance quality of life.
As global data demand continues to surge, LINX remains committed to building a faster, more resilient, and more inclusive internet, in the UK and across the world. For Britain, this strengthens its position as a competitive digital economy. For the global community, it means improved infrastructure, shared knowledge, and greater connectivity for all.
