Mike Blanche and Alex Bloor elected to the LINX Board at the Internet Exchange’s AGM

LINX members elected two members to its executive Board at its virtual annual general meeting on the 25th May.

For this year’s LINX Board election, members Mike Blanche and Steve Wright, had both retired by rotation. While Blanche had indicated his intention to seek re-election, former LINX Chair, Wright, was unable to stand again having completed the maximum of three terms in office.

This meant that there was guaranteed to be at least one new face on the LINX Board. Following voting at the AGM, Mike Blanche and Alex Bloor garnered the most support from the membership and are hereby elected to serve three-year terms.

Alex Bloor has considerable industry experience going back to the year 2000. He is General Manager of Andrews & Arnold Ltd, a small/niche Internet Service Provider providing broadband to home and business customers as well as VoIP services, ethernet, mobile data and SIP2SIM products. They also offer the FireBrick range of hardware network appliances.

Re-elected to the LINX Board is Mike Blanche, who also has extensive industry experience going back 25 years. Most recently this has been at Google, where in 2009 he joined to build a team of interconnection experts for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He now leads Google’s overall strategic relationships with telecoms operators in this region, as well as advise on public policy issues, telecoms infrastructure, and IP interconnection. He is Chair of the LINX Remuneration Committee and a member of the LINX Governance Committee.

LINX Launch Closed User Group Services

Following interest and demand from the membership community, LINX are now giving their members the opportunity to create Closed User Groups to deliver or access a particular service.

A Closed User Group is a method of allowing a group of networks to pass traffic exclusively between themselves. Typically, this is for a specific group task, such as communicating between suppliers or for passing voice traffic between members. It can also be used by LINX members offering their services for consumption across the LINX fabric, for example, DDoS protection services.

The new Closed User Group service is currently available at LINX in London, LON1 and LON2 networks and at regional interconnection points, LINX Manchester and LINX NoVA in the US. It is available to order now through the LINX member portal and new enquiries or questions can be sent to joinhelp@linx.net.

Core ISL Upgrades for LON1

The LINX engineering team have upgraded the ISL (inter-switching-link) capacity at the Telehouse North (THN) and West (THW) locations on our LON1 London network. These ISLs provide fast, secure and low latency links for our members when inter-connecting between Telehouse sites.

This upgrade was needed due to the large amount of traffic passing between the Telehouse sites, peaks of over 700G being hit on the THN to THW route alone on the LINX LON1 platform. Completing this upgrade means that we have additional capacity and not reaching any limits where member traffic may have been dropped in the event of a failure.

LINX and TELEHOUSE NYIIX Partner to Strengthen US Interconnection Services

TELEHOUSE NYIIX and LINX have announced a new strategic partnership within U.S. NYIIX and LINX NoVA. Both exchanges will be interconnecting to allow each IXP’s members to peer with the other party’s members. The connection is planned to go live in the next few weeks.

LINX recently announced a further network expansion at LINX NoVA, moving from three data centre PoPs to four. Driven by U.S. growth and an existing strong partner relationship with TELEHOUSE Europe, this NYIIX partnership allows networks peering at LINX NoVA or any of NYIIX’s U.S. locations to leverage the strong ecosystems across this mutual portfolio of interconnection points.

Established in 1996 and founded by TELEHOUSE America, the NYIIX Peering Exchange is one of the largest neutral Internet exchange points on the U.S. East Coast and across the world. Today, TELEHOUSE America delivers interconnection points in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles with over 250 member networks connected and peering and more than 1 Tbps in peak traffic.

Biden Expands List of Chinese Companies Subject to US Investment Ban

US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order banning Americans from investing in dozens of Chinese companies with alleged ties to defence or surveillance technology sectors.

The order comes into effect on 2 August and expands the previous list issued by former President Donald Trump from 31 to 59 companies including Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), China Mobile Communications Group, China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC). The list of firms will be updated on a rolling basis.

The White House said the decision to expand the scope of the order is due to the “unusual and extraordinary threats” posed by Chinese surveillance technology.

China condemned the move and said it “will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.”
